Identification

Webbed skin from front to rear limbs allow for this tree squirrel to use gravity to glide from limb to limb over much longer distances than normally possible. Smaller overall size with whiter belly than the Northern Flying Squirrel. Body fur color is highly variable and eyes are relatively large for the size of the animal. Southern Flying Squirrels are nocturnal and more prevalent at lower elevations. Body spreads in the air to help the animals soar in the tree canopy up to distances of 90 meters. Landing mark on ground can sometime be spotted and is known as a “stizmark”. Similar tracks to red squirrels.

Description
