Identification

The most-widely distributed deer in North America and varies in size throughout range. Males have antlers that are shed yearly while females are antlerless. Generally medium in size and adaptable to a wide range of habitats. Usually red-brown in color that changes to a gray brown in the fall. They have distinct white tails that they will flash like a flag to signal others in their group of danger. Females travel in groups as do some young males. They travel and graze in fields, woods and trails but also make their own established paths.

Description
These deer consume a huge variety of plant based food including grasses, shrubs, trees, nuts, mushroom and crops. They are known to damage specimen landscaping plants and considered a pest in some areas. Approximately 2 million White Tailed Deer are taken annually in state-regulated hunting seasons while many more are killed in automobile collisions. 1-2 babies (fawns) are born to most females (does) annually each spring following a 200 day gestation.
